2026年6月14日から、偽造防止性能を強化した「新様式の在留カード」及び「特定在留カード」の交付が始まりました。新様式では、カード券面から「在留期間」「許可の種類」「許可年月日」の記載がなくなり、これらの情報はICチップを読み取らないと確認できない仕様に変更されています。
出入国在留管理庁が読取アプリを改修（8月19日）
これに対応するため、出入国在留管理庁は2026年8月19日、無料配布している公式アプリ「在留カード等読取アプリケーション」を改修し、新様式のカードを読み取った際にもこれら3項目を画面上で確認できるようにしました（なお「交付年月日」は引き続き本アプリでは確認できませんのでご注意ください）。
実務での注意点
- 雇用主、日本語学校、行政書士など、在留資格の有効期限や許可の種類を確認する必要がある方は、必ずアプリを最新版にアップデートしてください
- 特定在留カードはマイナンバーカード機能も備えているため、デジタル庁の「対面確認アプリ」（iOS版のみ対応）でも同様の情報を読み取ることができます
- 旧様式のカードをお持ちの方は、引き続き券面の記載で確認可能です（アプリの更新は不要です）

[This Week's Immigration Update] Residence Card Reading App Updated
Since June 14, 2026, new-format residence cards and specified residence cards no longer print the period of stay, type of permission, or permission date on the card face — these can only be checked by reading the IC chip. On August 19, the Immigration Services Agency updated its official reading app to display this information on screen. Employers, Japanese language schools, and gyoseishoshi should update the app.
Since June 14, 2026, Japan has been issuing "new-format residence cards" and "specified residence cards" with enhanced anti-counterfeiting features. Under the new format, the "period of stay," "type of permission," and "permission date" are no longer printed on the face of the card — this information can only be checked by reading the card's IC chip.
ISA updates its residence card reading app (August 19)
To address this, on August 19, 2026, the Immigration Services Agency of Japan (ISA) updated its free official "Residence Card Reading Application" so that these three items can now be displayed on screen when scanning a new-format card (note: the "date of issuance" still cannot be confirmed through this app).
Practical points to note
- Employers, Japanese language schools, gyoseishoshi (administrative scriveners), and anyone who needs to verify a resident's visa status or expiry date should update to the latest version of the app
- Because the specified residence card also functions as a My Number card, its information can also be read using the Digital Agency's "Taimen Kakunin" (face-to-face verification) app — iOS only
- If you still hold an old-format card, the information remains printed directly on the card face as before — no app update needed
